UPDATED ALERT FOR JAN 29-FEB 4:

For many of you this may not be an issue directly, but it is an example of how pervasive government involvement in our lives has gotten. It strikes to the core of a private property, the free market, and we as citizens being able to make choices for ourselves, particularly healthy food choices.

Right now there is a piece of legislation that initially allowed for the outright sale of raw milk/real milk in Kentucky. That bill while a good start, despite being talked about for years had some concerns. First the Health Department hated it, and secondly it was too vague in dealing with regulation.

However, a better piece of legislation has come of this as we had success in the Senate Agriculture Committee with an 8-2 vote for the Sen Schickel’s Committee Substitute as detailed below.

SB 47. The primary sponsor of the bill entered a Senate Committee (SCS) Substitute in the Agriculture Committee. This SCS will protect shared livestock (herdshares/cowshares) and products from regulatory agencies. This bill is a very important step in the direction of food sovereignty.

Before the law was silent on cowshares/herdshares but that did not stop the Health Department from raiding these legal operations. This will now protect those operations. Some of you at this point may be asking what is a cowshare/herdshare, it is essentially a group of people getting together to take ownership in a cow and all the responsibilities there of in a private contract so that they can have raw milk/real milk.

While this bill passed committee there are influential organizations that would rather this bill not see the light of day let alone get out of committee for a vote, which could happen Monday.

Now that you have the background, here is the action you need to take

Call the legislative line in Frankfort and tell them you would like to leave 2 messages:

1-800-372-7181

First Message is to thank Sen. Schickel for sponsoring SB 47 and introducing his Committee Substitute to protect cowshares/heardshares, and the protection of private contracts, and preserving family’s rights to make healthy food choices.

Second Message is to All Senate Leadership, and YOUR Senator asking them to Support SB 47 protecting cowshares/heardshares and the protection of private contracts and preserving family’srights to make healthy food choices.

IMPORTANT: These messages must be received before 2:00 PM as that is when the Senate will meets to possible discuss voting on this bill. The reason these calls are so imperative is the Health Department still hates it and the Kentucky Farm Bureau as well as the Dairy Association have issues with it. We cannot let these large bureaucracies and organizations dictate to us how we should feed our families and take care of our health.

The lines are open until 11PM Weekdays, so if it does not pass Monday afternoon you need to keep calling the rest of this week.

ALSO….

You may want to make e-mails to the legislators tonight and tomorrow morning. Look at the examples in the contact legislator section of our e-mail in the left hand column that method should work.

A LOT OF EFFORT WENT INTO THIS LEGISLATION AND RAISING PUBLIC AWARENESS UP TO THIS POINT, LET’S NOT SQUANDER THIS OPPORTUNITY!

Industrial Hemp Event at the Capitol:

KY Ag Commissioner James Comer will hold a press conference this THURSDAY Jan. 19th at 3:30pm in support of Industrial Hemp Legislation.

Location: TBA (Tentatively Rm 110 in the Annex) Email to follow as soon as location is confirmed.

Commissioner Comer will be joined by Rep. Richard Henderson (D- Montgomery Co.) and Sen. Joey Pendleton (D- Christian Co) (Invited) in a press conference as complete proponents of Henderson’s bill in allowing Industrial Hemp to become once again a viable crop in Kentucky. If this bill is passed thousands upon thousands of jobs in our Commonwealth will be created.

Commissioner Comer has made news recently because of his recent actions calling for a sweeping audit of the Department of Agriculture to address the mess that was handed to him by former Commissioner Richie Farmer. For him to take on the Industrial Hemp bill this early on in lieu of everything that he could be addressing should be very commendable to our new Commissioner.

We have pledged to Commissioner Comer to have 200 community supporters to show up for this press conference on Thursday at 3:30.

If we have 5 people show up, the media will not cover it. If we have 200 people then the media will have to cover it.

PLEASE send this to everyone you know that supports the bill to legalize industrial hemp.

This post is to inform our visitors that tomorrow Jan 18th, 2012 TBK will be blacked out (if the plugin/code works like it should) in the largest online protest. We are protesting SOPA and PIPA which are anti-piracy laws but are way too broad in that they allow the government to just shut your website down without due process. In other words giving the government the kill switch on internet freedom of speech.
